But one of the most common superstitions is the one that having a black cat cross your path is bad luck that leads to a terrible outcome. So how did this come about? It is believe that this started during witch hunts in the 15th century. For some obscure reason a black cat was seen as an evil companion for witches and linked to the devil. Because they were seen as demons it was thought that if they crossed your path it would block your entrance to heaven.
